Welcome to

In the Wild Photography

This website is dedicated to showcasing my own images and hosting a blog, where I'll pass along news, useful hints and techniques, cool ideas and other things of a photographic nature. And I mean that literally.

As the site's name suggests, my photography tends to focus almost exclusively on subjects found in nature, and in their natural habitats, including Amphibians & Reptiles, Animals, Aquatic Life, Birds, Flowers & Plants, Insects & Spiders and Landscapes. There's also a section for the weird, obscure and just plain odd stuff we all encounter on occasion as we go about our daily lives - Found In The Wild. Except where indicated, nothing has been staged or enhanced in any imaging software, so what you see is what I was lucky enough to shoot.

Most photos were shot in RAW digital format using a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR camera, though a few here and there were taken with whatever equipment was on hand at the moment - a cell phone, my wife's camera, so on and so forth.

So, check out the gallery and enjoy. Should you wish to use any images for any commercial purpose, please contact me here prior to use to obtain a license.

In The Wild: Someone's A Long Way From Home

We've had a new visitor to the yard that's pretty rare to this immediate area. Click through to check out the pictures and find out more about this creature.

In The Wild: Our Gray Fox Makes A Return

Our resident gray fox is back, and we've caught sight of it swinging by in the evenings. But, upon returning from a quick trip out, we found it having an afternoon snack out in the yard. A truly beautiful animal. Click through to check out the pictures.

In The Wild: Our Lilies Are Being Eaten

Something has rampaged through our lily bed, chomping off the top of the lilies, to which we say "Grrr..." So we set up the trusty trail cam to try and catch the culprit in the act. We have some suspects and some pretty damning evidence of who's responsible. And we have questions for you too. Click through to find out more.

In The Wild: It's Groundhog Day... Again...

Grady's Den, Chimney Rock, NCIt's Groundhog Day again in the US, and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania has predicted an early spring by not seeing his shadow. Not to be outdone, Western North Carolina gets in on the action with a foretelling by Grady the Groundhog of Chimney Rock, NC. Will he see his shadow and predict an early spring, or will we face another six weeks of winter? Click through to find out!

In The Wild: An Eastern Box Turtle Takes A Stroll

I was headed out to see a client just recently, jumped in the car and started off, only to slam on the brakes halfway down the driveway. Rather unexpectedly, there was an Eastern Box Turtle making its way across my path and I had to do some funky double foot pedal maneuvers to reverse so as to not run over it. Click through for more info on this turtle and -- of course -- some pictures.

In The Wild: Someone Thinks They're Sly

So there we are, another long day of work behind us and we're just finishing up our dinner when we look out into the yard and exclaim, "What the heck is that?" After some fumbling around, a bit more scrambling and several "where's my camera?" later, we capture it on film in pixels. This post is all about our new visitor of late. Click through to find out more.

In The Wild: There's A Whole Lot Of Bull...

Coastal ExpeditionsA whole lot of Bull's Island that is... On a trip to South Carolina and under the hospitality of Coastal Expeditions, we board a boat and venture out into Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, making landfall on Bull's Island. Click through to read more.

In The Wild: Bearing It All

It's not everyday that you roll out of bed, stick your head out on the porch to see the world and the weather, and find yourself staring at a black bear that's decided to camp out in your back yard. Today, however, was one of those days. Click through to see pictures and some video of what awaited us when awoke this morning, including our bear bearing all.

In The Wild: Under The Water

South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston, SCOk, technically speaking, the In The Wild crew weren't underwater, but a bunch of other stuff was. We've been on another trip south to the Charleston, SC, area. It's always a fun time, and on this occasion we took the opportunity to check out the South Carolina Aquarium in downtown Charleston. There were some cool creatures and some cool pictures as a result - see what we found there by clicking through.

In The Wild: Christmas Tree Farms Abound

Tom Sawyer Christmas Tree FarmI have to admit that I wasn't aware of it before moving to this neck of the woods, but we're surrounded by Christmas tree farms. And because of that, rather than going down to the local bodega/corner store to buy a real tree or to Walmart to buy one that was made in China, folks around these parts head down the road to choose and cut a tree. Click through for some photos of our experience this year, a video of our tree being cut down, and some interesting facts and figures about the Christmas tree industry.

In The Wild: The Mountain-Laurel Is Blooming

It's a beautiful time of year in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Days are warm, nights are cool and everything is turning green. And, to top it off, the mountain-laurel is starting to bloom. And it's everywhere. Click through to check the different stages from bud to bloom.
