It was a few years ago that I happened upon the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) website. Each day they post a new picture that focuses on space and the sky in general. Some are pictures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope looking deep into space, others by radio telescopes doing the same thing, sometimes pictures of Mars taken by the Mars Rover that's still pottering about on the planet, and then some by photographers on Earth capturing auroras and other natural events.
There's a splattering of samples below (click on the image to be taken to the high-res version on the NASA site), including today's of the volcano and lightning strikes. I believe there's also an app that's available, and a daily email that you can sign up to if you're interested. The email list was made by someone who wrote a script to send the page out so it may not be that easy to find - leave a comment or contact me if you'd like more details.
