Blog
I'm certainly no writer, but this blog will be regularly updated with interesting news, camera & photography tricks, tips and techniques, cool images and recent photos of my own and others from around the web. And there'll be some tales of life in Western North Carolina, snapping the odd, funny, or just downright "don't see that every day". In The Wild: It's Groundhog Day... Again...
- Blog
It's Groundhog Day again in the US, and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania has predicted an early spring by not seeing his shadow. Not to be outdone, Western North Carolina gets in on the action with a foretelling by Grady the Groundhog of Chimney Rock, NC. In The Wild: Christmas Tree Farms Abound
- Blog
I have to admit that I wasn't aware of it before moving to this neck of the woods, but we're surrounded by Christmas tree farms. And because of that, rather than going down to the local bodega/corner store to buy a real tree or to Walmart to buy one that was made in China, folks around these parts head down the road to choose and cut a tree. Click through for some photos of our experience this year, a video of our tree being cut down, and some interesting facts and figures about the Christmas tree industry.
In The Wild: We Hike Up Whiteside Mountain

After some cooler temperatures of late, a high pressure system that surrounded us this weekend brought cloudless skies, zero wind and some warmer weather. The perfect opportunity to go on a hike up a mountain. Click through to see where we went and what we saw when we got there. It was another awesome experience In The Wild...
In The Wild: Caption Competition: Bird v. Cat
- Blog
In the first of a possible series of occasional caption competitions (how uncommitted is that!), we have an image of one of our cats (named Antimony) and a ruby-crowned kinglet (a bird as yet unnamed). Add a comment with your caption for your chance to win a print of an image of your choosing, or just for fun... Closing date is Friday 16th November, after which winner will be selected by a very biased panel of judges and notified via email.
In The Wild: We Mount An Expedition To Rockhouse Falls
- Blog
Some time back, a couple of our neighbors had mentioned a walking trail in our neighborhood, pointing out roughly where it began. We hadn't had the time to investigate before, but with the current blast of warm temperatures and the threat of cooler ones coming in a few days, we decided to don our Indiana Jones gear and set off into the depths of the forest to see what we could find. What we found and saw was awesome. Click through to check out the story, some pictures and a couple of videos.

In The Wild: We Just Met Chuck, Our Resident Woodchuck
- Blog
Recently, I was sat quietly at home, working away, when I heard some odd noises coming from outside. Noises I'd not heard before. Noises that were definitely odd. I went off to investigate and came face-to-face with Chuck. Click through to find out more...
